Two new exhibitions opening this Friday at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions and Honfleur Gallery

The Gallery at Vivid Solu/ons and Honfleur Gallery are pleased to announce two exhibitions opening April 26, 2013. Figures in Jazz by John K. Lawson at Honfleur Gallery presents large-‐ scale vibrant collage portraits of jazz legends, including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Wynton Marsalis, and Miles Davis. Unsung Jazz by Antoine Sanfuentes at The Gallery at Vivid Solu/ons brings together the photographer’s ongoing project of documen/ng the local jazz performers who have had a substan/al impact on jazz in Washington, DC but are rela/vely unknown outside the area. There will be a joint opening recep/on with the ar/sts on Friday April 26, 2013 from 6-‐8 p.m., with a performance by the Nasar Abadey Trio from 8-‐10 p.m. There will be two addi/onal jazz performances at Honfleur Gallery during the course of the exhibi/ons; on May 16th and on June 6th.

John K. Lawson was born in Birmingham, England in 1962 and raised mostly in the countryside un/l his family moved to South London when he was a young teenager. He first came to America on a student exchange program in engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. There his ar/s/c abili/es were encouraged, and he returned to England two years later to concentrate on landscape pain/ng. Eventually, Lawson was drawn back to the Deep South, and soon became part of an underground art culture in New Orleans that included working in tacoo, T-‐shirt and mural designs long before these mediums became mainstream. Hurricane Katrina submerged his studio and destroyed 25 years’ worth of artwork and ephemera. Lawson began to rework the damaged remnants into collages and started working in the manner in which he made the Figures in Jazz portraits.

Check out some recent photos that we took of the progress, notice the new windows in the retail, gallery, and wellness studios. Can the creative economy spur economic development in Anacostia?

courtesy of BBC News
Last month, BBC News paid a visit to our neighborhood to investigate how art is being used to revitalize economically depressed communities. The segment includes interviews with Duane Gautier, CEO of ARCH Development Corporation (1227 Good Hope Rd SE)  and William Fadel, Owner of Grubb's Pharmarcy Southeast (1800 MLK Jr. Ave SE). Currently Anacostia is home to four art galleries, two museums, a fine art print lab,  a radio station, numerous street murals, an art and light festival,  and more talented artists than you can shake a paint brush at!  Come spring, the Anacostia Playhouse and Anacostia Arts Center will be a reality.

So with that in mind, what do you think? Can art be used as a catalyst to drive economic development? If the artists come will business and other amneties be sure to follow?

Arts Center to Open in Anacostia

Coming Soon: The Anacostia Arts Center

ARCH Development Corporation (ADC) announces the Anacostia Arts Center, coming spring 2013 to Historic Anacostia. Designed to be a community arts nucleus, the Anacostia Arts Center will bring approximately 10,000 square feet of creative commercial space to Good Hope Road SE. Conveniently located at the south end of the 11th Street Bridge between Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and 13th Street SE, the Anacostia Arts Center will bring independent creative projects together under one roof.

Anacostia Arts Center will occupy the street level of 1231 Good Hope Road SE, formally the ARCH Training Center. The property is divided up into spaces connected by a main hall, with common lounge areas in the front and rear of the building.

Currently under construction, the space will include: a built-out black box theater, the American Poetry Museum Reading Room, the short-term creative rental facility Blank Space SE, a coffee shop & juice bar, three gallery rental spaces, and two boutique/wellness center rental spaces. Now accepting proposals and lease applications: the black box theater, all gallery and boutique/wellness center spaces, coffee shop & juice bar.

Duane Gautier, CEO of ADC, explains his vision for the center: "This project will assist in transforming the Anacostia neighborhood into a place people recognize as an arts destination."
