Two new exhibitions opening this Friday at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions and Honfleur Gallery

The Gallery at Vivid Solu/ons and Honfleur Gallery are pleased to announce two exhibitions opening April 26, 2013. Figures in Jazz by John K. Lawson at Honfleur Gallery presents large-‐ scale vibrant collage portraits of jazz legends, including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Wynton Marsalis, and Miles Davis. Unsung Jazz by Antoine Sanfuentes at The Gallery at Vivid Solu/ons brings together the photographer’s ongoing project of documen/ng the local jazz performers who have had a substan/al impact on jazz in Washington, DC but are rela/vely unknown outside the area. There will be a joint opening recep/on with the ar/sts on Friday April 26, 2013 from 6-‐8 p.m., with a performance by the Nasar Abadey Trio from 8-‐10 p.m. There will be two addi/onal jazz performances at Honfleur Gallery during the course of the exhibi/ons; on May 16th and on June 6th.

John K. Lawson was born in Birmingham, England in 1962 and raised mostly in the countryside un/l his family moved to South London when he was a young teenager. He first came to America on a student exchange program in engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. There his ar/s/c abili/es were encouraged, and he returned to England two years later to concentrate on landscape pain/ng. Eventually, Lawson was drawn back to the Deep South, and soon became part of an underground art culture in New Orleans that included working in tacoo, T-‐shirt and mural designs long before these mediums became mainstream. Hurricane Katrina submerged his studio and destroyed 25 years’ worth of artwork and ephemera. Lawson began to rework the damaged remnants into collages and started working in the manner in which he made the Figures in Jazz portraits.

Friday, April 26th, 6pm - 9pm at the Anacostia Arts Center

Poulet et Gaufres
Poulet et Gaufres (that's Chicken and Waffles to you and me) will be popping up in Anacostia April 26th, 6-9pm, in conjunction with Honfleur Gallery and The Gallery at Vivid Solutions'  Figures in Jazz and Unsung Jazz exhibits. What better way to celebrate an evening of jazz portraits and music (provided by Twins Lounge) than with food that originated in Memphis in the late night hours after the jazz clubs shut down. You probably didn't know that chicken and waffles began as a dish eaten in the pre-dawn hours when restaurants would make use of left-over chicken for their breakfast customers.
Poulet et Gaufres offers its modern spin on this classic combination with waffle cones, Belgian waffles, biscuit waffles, mango chipotle ketchup, pickled chicken with tomato jam, 16 Spice Chicken, and other amazing flavor combos.  Let the tradition live on!

Buy a ticket for just chicken and waffles, or chicken and waffles plus a beer. Tickets can also be purchased day-of at the door, but availability is not guaranteed.  Free parking is available for those who purchase tickets in advance.

East of the River Distinguished Artist Award - $5,000 prize

Presented by Honfleur Gallery with funding from the Gautier Family
The second-annual East of the River Distinguished Artist Award recognizes a current East of the Anacostia River artist for artistic excellence as well as significant impact on the DC cultural life.
One EOR artist is honored with this $5,000 award each year.
Who is eligible?
Artists who currently live East of the Anacostia River neighborhoods in all disciplines—including dance, film, literature, music, theater, photography and visual arts—whose careers have made a substantial impact on the arts in the District of Columbia may apply. Artists must have lived East of Anacostia River for at least one year and worked in District of Columbia for more than five years. No one may receive the award more than once. No posthumous awards will be made. Application must include at least two pieces of work that have been completed or are in progress from the current year of application.
  • All applications for the 2013 East of the River Distinguished Artist Award are due Friday June 7, 2013.
  • Second-parties may nominate an artist to apply for the award, but the artist but complete the application themselves by the above due date.

What is the purpose of the award?
The award celebrates the achievements and contributions of East of the River artists who, individually and collectively, have made an impact for the wealth of arts in Washington, D.C. Although these East of the River artists have been working in the District of Columbia over a number of years, their role in the DC cultural scene is often overlooked. In recognizing them, the award will help document the East of the River cultural history and continue the long succession of tradition EOR artists. This award is the newest component of the ARCH Development Corporation support for local artists and will be given on an annual basis.
