GreatSchools DC Seeks Donations For Backpack Drive

Dear DC Community Member,

We hope this finds your summer off to a fantastic start!

GreatSchools DC is already looking ahead to the new school year and will be hosting our first annual “Back to School and Ready to Learn” event taking place Saturday, August 13th.  Our goal is to provide 500 families with the materials they need for their children to head off to the first day of school as equipped as they can be.

Will you consider making a donation to help a family in your community and become a member of the GreatSchools DC Backpack Brigade 2011?  We have determined it will take $7,500 and we need your help to make it happen!

Book bags – especially for our smallest students – will be the largest expense followed by supplies to fill each bag (pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, etc).  We will also be having a raffle and community resource tables to help make the start of the new school year as smooth as possible.

All materials must be purchased by July 29th and we would like nothing more than to be able to say the DC community came out in force to help their fellow neighbors.  We are delighted to be partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington FBR Branch at THEARC, who have generously donated their gymnasium for the event.  We also want to thank Fight For Children for their support.

Feb 28: TOWN HALL EVENT TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL TOOLS TO D.C. PARENTS

On Monday, February 28, education and community leaders as well as parents and students will gather for a Town Hall event on parent engagement. The evening will feature clips from the award-winning documentary, WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” and an audience Q&A and panel discussion moderated by author and Time magazine contributor, Amanda Ripley focusing on providing information and tools for parents to better navigate the DCPS system as well as other educational options. Following the program, attendees will be able to further explore educational choices and speak with local representatives of several community youth and school organizations at an “Action Center” which will provide materials and information about many local programs and facilities.

Additionally, there will be volunteers on site to assist parents with submissions for the District’s Out of Boundary Enrollment, which are due by 11:59 p.m. on February 28. This process allows parents of students in D.C. Public Schools to pursue enrollment opportunities outside their assigned neighborhood school.

GreatSchools DC is giving away FREE tickets to see "Waiting for Superman" this Thursday!

Recording artist and philanthropist John Legend and his non-profit foundation The Show Me Campaign (http://www.showmecampaign.org/ ) have generously offered to bring the powerful film “Waiting for Superman" to parents for whom a movie night is a budget challenge by donating 1,244 tickets to GreatSchools to disperse in DC and Milwaukee. The movie takes a deeply personal look by the director into the current state of public education in America today and follows five students and their families – one of whom is from right here in Washington, DC - on their quests for a great education.

We would like to engage parents  to come and see the film. In addition to the ticket, every movie-goer will receive a $10 gift card towards a drink and a snack before the show. The event will take place:

Date: Thursday, October 21
Time: Movie starts promptly at 7:00pm (we will end at 9:15pm)
Location: Landmark Theatres E-Street Cinema - 555 11th Street NW, Washington, DC 20004

This is a parent-night only event; we will not offer childcare so folks will need to make arrangements before committing to a seat.

Because this movie is in such high demand (the theater has consistently sold out this particular time every night), any parent interested in attending needs to RSVP via email at dc@greatschools.org  with their name, phone number and email address by end of day Wednesday, October 20th. We will provide instructions once we have filled the list, but since we only have 225 seats they will move fast and folks who do not have their tickets in hand by 6:45pm will lose their seat to someone on the waiting list.
