ARCH presents another amazing night of Arts in Anacostia

On Friday, April 15, 2011, ARCH Development Corporation delivered yet another wonderful evening of Arts on the Anacostia Avenue with openings at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions, Blank Space SE, and Honfleur Gallery.  Art lovers from both within and outside of Ward 8 descended on Historic Anacostia for a night of art, music, and fun. A great time was had by all and it was wonderful seeing people move from one exhibition to the next, and for many, experiencing Anacostia for the first time.

Kudos to Amy, Beth, Briony, and the entire ARCH team for putting together such an amazing event! Well done!

Missed last night's event? The presentation at Blank Space SE will be available through next week and the exhibitions at Honfleur and Vivid will run through May 20 and June 3 respectively. Be sure to put them on your calendar -- and bring friends!

Including some pictures of last night's festivities.

Destino

the inexorable journey across Mexico to El Sueño Americano

Michelle Frankfurter

April 15 - June 3 2011

Artist Statement : My project, Destino, meaning both “destination” and “destiny” in Spanish, portrays Central American migrants who endure a host of adversities in a desperate, gauntlet-running journey across Mexico. In a wandering odyssey, they travel on foot and by rail, often relying on the network of freight trains lurching across Mexico in an attempt to enter the United States illegally. Central American migration to the United States began in the 1980’s – the consequence of bloody civil wars and relentless poverty. Like Mexico, the Central American nations of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala suffer from similar drug and gang related violence and a high incidence of domestic abuse. Crippling NAFTA/CAFTA trade policies have exacerbated the situation for the nations’ poor. In 2009, democratically-elected Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya was ousted by a military coup, further destabilizing an already struggling economy and increasing human rights violations.

The New Clear Daze exhibit is an exploration of similarities and differences in the work of four emerging Baltimore visual artists. David Fair, Matt Bovie, Eamon Espey, Andrew Liang focus heavily on color and pattern in their work, yet each has a unique and visceral approach. The media employed by these artists ranges widely, from textile-based to illustration and mixed media to painting.
